We’d like to introduce Renew Acupuncture, a local clinic that offers Eastern Medicine for the Modern World. The company’s primary services include acupuncture, cupping, Chinese herbal medicine, and nutrition counseling. If you suffer from chronic and acute pain, stress, fatigue, or anxiety, Renew Acupuncture can provide individualized solutions that are drug-free, safe, and non-addictive. To learn more about this effective and qualified acupuncture clinic, check out our article with Sonal Patel, the company’s owner, and acupuncturist.

Sonal, what is your background?

My background in healthcare began in 1999 as a Respiratory Therapist. For the most part, I worked in the ICU and enjoyed the various cases and challenges but I always knew that I would move on to a more holistic field. Western medicine has numerous side effects and places no (or minimal) emphasis on preventative care such as nutrition and lifestyle choices. It took a few years but I stumbled upon Chinese Medicine the way most Licensed Acupuncturists do – as a patient.

In 2010, I began to experience a few of the classic thyroid symptoms and decided to try Chinese Medicine at the recommendation of a co-worker. The acupuncturist prescribed an herbal formula, changed my diet, and recommended some minor changes to my lifestyle. After 3-4 sessions I began to feel better and after a few more, I fell in love with the Medicine. It is natural, safe and it works. It was at this time, I decided to pursue a Masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

What separates you from the competition?

I studied Chinese Medicine at Five Branches University in Santa Cruz, California. The program was centered around acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietetics, mind-body movement such as Tai-Chi and Qi Gong as well as Tuina (a form of Chinese Massage). Sessions at Renew are not just about “needling”. I also offer bio-individual nutrition, healthy lifestyle choices, and mind-body practices. There is always enough time for my clients to discuss whatever questions they may have and to make them feel comfortable for trusting me with their health and well-being.

What motivated you to start working for yourself?

To be honest, I did not envision working for myself due to the challenges that come along with running a small business. The idea of just walking into a clinic and working with patients and not having to be concerned about what goes on behind the scenes was very attractive. But after working in two different clinics followed by multiple interviews with others, I realized starting my own business was meant to be.

What is the biggest advantage that comes with owning your business?

The advantage of working for myself is having the freedom to practice and share this medicine in a way that I prefer. There are different facets to Chinese Medicine and therefore many ways one can treat. Flexibility in setting my hours and having the extra time for certain clients that may need it is another plus! Third, as a person who benefits from acupuncture, I wanted to create an environment where I would want to receive care.

Where do you see your business growing in the future?

I envision my business and professional career growing into an integrative environment of different holistic medical professionals. Each of whom would be committed to the healing and growth of the person as a “whole”. I believe in making things happen but understand that there is a time, space, and sequence for everything to come together. With this realization, I can not place my goals into a five or ten-year plan. What I can plan for the future is to continue striving for success, staying abreast of the latest in Chinese Medicine, and sharing my knowledge with those who seek my services.

What is Renew Acupuncture’s mission statement?

To provide patient-centered care to keep the body, mind, and spirit strong in the modern world. My approach is to empower with education and use Eastern modalities to place clients on a path to living the best version of themselves.

What is the biggest issue for running this business?

I would say the disadvantage of running my own business is having to do everything myself. I handle the calls, paperwork, accounting, cleaning of the room and equipment, inventory, and marketing. Most days, there are no complaints!
