Janelle Alexis Salon was founded in 2017 but has been making waves in the Houston beauty market for several years. The company’s owner, Janelle, has an extensive background in the industry, having grown up in hair salons to now running a highly reviewed salon business of her own. Janelle, what is your background?
I am a licensed Cosmetologist and Makeup artist in Houston. Having worked in every facet in the salon business for over 20 years, working behind the chair is my passion. Education is key when it comes to this industry. I have been an educator for over 12 years with the last serving as a national educator for Babe Hair Extensions. This is why my apprenticeship program at my salon is so much fun for me. I get to teach these GREEN stylists to follow the rules and then how to break them in the future. We have been in business for almost 3 years, with our anniversary coming up in October.
Why should a customer choose you over another salon?
Our knowledge and customer service is key. We have so much talent, years of experience, and a drive to learn every day. If you are looking for hair extensions, we have you covered, with 5 different methods available. If you want balayage we have you covered. I personally trained to do customized balayage and we have a balayage expert in the house. His method is the original french way of doing balayage. Color- we customize each color to fit our guest’s look, skin color, and want. Men’s cuts- we have you covered as well. Kids cuts- my little secret ( I am a kid whisperer) hahaha! No, I love children, and after we build that trust with each other we tell mom and dad bye, we have this covered! And the kids get a treat at the end. We are a salon that specializes in so many things that we have you covered!
What made you want to start this business?
Growing up in the salon industry, I thought it would be so cool to own one. This one actually fell into my lap. I wasn’t really looking to purchase a salon, but it was meant to be and we have run with it! Besides, after working with my mom who also owns a salon for a couple of years, her organization is one of the things that was drilled into me!
What is your mission statement?
It is my firm belief that when it comes to making someone feel as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside, the possibilities are endless!
What are the biggest issues for running Janelle Alexis Salon?
Time! I feel like there is not enough for work and life balance. After we shut down for the weeks from coronavirus, I was able to spend some quality time with my family that I had not done in years. It really gave me a perspective of what is important and what can wait. The other issue is managing so many different personalities. You cant give them the hand and walk away. I have to listen, understand, and try to fix what is going on. I am also very non-confrontational, so correcting someone’s bad behavior drives me crazy. You would think that at our ages we would all be grown-ups. I think the last issue I have is learning to say NO. I am a very understanding person and an empath, so I feel everyone’s feelings. But at some point when you are a bleeding heart you have to be able to say NO.

The hairstylists less the newest one, which was my first apprentice have years of experience. We started our junior stylist program with her.
